Perhaps this is because of all the curves - I really dont know. The Ansonia clock line is extensive including mantel, anniversary and schoolhouse clocks. My observation is that this watch does not seem to shine and dazzle as with my other GS watches. Overall it feels softer, more organic, very discrete. The crystal has a more pronounced dome to it and the case sides are more moulded with "feminine curves". This watch is very different in character, with a small dial (I suspect too small for many) and for me offers a touch of old school charm. Your SBGX083 looks marvellous however and I can quite understand your choice.Īs an aside, I also have a SBGX005 with a champagne dial which I usually wear on a cordovan or shark strap. As with Itsguy, I prefer wearing this watch when it looks a bit worn in, covered in finger grease. I bought my SBGX061 despite its known mirror polishing, for its other qualities and as a discrete and convenient default choice wearer. I have done this in order to dress down what I agree can appear at times to be dazzlingly shiny watch. I have a SBGX061 which I wear on a Rios Chicago Cordovan strap or Osiris (19mm) and Isis (20mm) rubber straps from Cousins UK. Your detailed observations and photos should be of help to any prospective purchaser.

Thank you Yonsson for putting together your comparison of these two watches. I could easily and up collecting several 9F variations, but I'm managing to restrain myself! Superbly comfortable and very well made, and this one is running at +3 a year. Overall it's quite subtle and understated but the way it keeps changing keeps you entertained, it's like having five watches.

The dial is mercurial - sometimes the Seiko and GS logos disappear completely, sometimes the chapter ring is highly contrasted, there can be colourful diffraction on the indices and a sunburst when it's in full on 'disco' mood, or it can be very muted in low light with the hands contrasting sharply. I actually prefer it when it gets a bit finger marked and worn in, and you can tell what shape it is. At first, all that 'mirror polishing' is so shiny, you can hardly tell what the watch looks like, it keeps changing. The biggest difference I think is the larger polished area along the sides leading into the crown guard, which accounts for the extra mm or so - on the 63/61 it's brushed along the top of the lugs, which are differently shaped. Oddly, I also found myself hankering after the 'other one', the SBGX063, they are indeed different enough to make you want both. I'm afraid I don't have any decent pictures, but here's its blonde twin: The 61 was close to perfect, but this is perfect. My guess is the 83 has a SLIGHTLY larger dial.

Then there are the more subtle differences ĭifference in dial text (placement of the tiny model text) This looks quite odd on pictures, but great IRL.Ħ1 is almost all glossy finish, but the 83 is mostly brushed, creating a larger and more sporty presence. The 83 also has a convex shaped bezel instead of the concave on the 61.

The 83 is also a bit higher, and the case has the flat center line most automatic versions have, while the 61 doesn't. The difference in size is really quite big since the crown is larger on the 83, making the crown guards large. The 61 is 37mm (without the crown) and the 83 is 38,5mm. The 83 is a Grand Seiko master shop version and the price is £600 higher than the 61. The 83 is a few years newer and is basically a less dressy and more sporty version of the 61. The movement of the second hand is not staggering, but smooth thanks to the "two step movement". They both have the HAQ/HEQ thermo compensated 9F movement which is accurate to +-10 seconds per year thanks to the specially grown, cut and selected quartz crystals which are individually paired and adjusted to the hand assembled movement. I loved it, but it was just a tad too dressy for me.Īt first glance they look very similar, but they are actually quite different IRL. I sold my first Grand Seiko last week, a SBGX061.
